In the past year, Scranton Tomorrow initiated dialogue about the possibility of establishing a community housing land trust in Scranton, and has fostered the visioning process thus far, organizing a steering committee of community housing organizations and bringing in the national leader in land trust development to speak to a group of 50 community stakeholders. Scranton Tomorrow and the Land Trust Steering Committee are researching potential partner organizations and agencies for a community housing land trust, a non-profit organization whose goal is to acquire and hold land for the benefit of the community and provide secure affordable access to land and housing for community residents. What is a community housing land trust? A community land trust is a private, non-profit organization whose goal is to acquire and hold land for the benefit of the community and provide secure affordable access to land and housing for community residents. Community Land Trusts attempt to meet the needs of those priced out of the housing market. They help to reduce speculation and absentee ownership of land and housing and preserve the long-term affordability of housing.
